![]() ![]() I looked forward to traveling with coworkers and to have a change of scenery several times a year since the office is a very toxic environment. But when someone asked for better retirement benefits for employees, the owner demoted this person for not being grateful. The amount of money spent alone on Christmas decorations, building decor, new cars, fake palm trees outside, and useless purchases would blow your mind. I often wonder how they stay in business. The way this company runs is unlike anything I've ever seen. However, neither of the owners have any formal background in business, and it shows. One of the owners found a need for speech therapy products and this worked out really well for her. This company has been very successful for 30+ years because there has never been any competition. The company is family run, so it feels very much like the owners are "mom and dad" and the employees are the "children." Mom and dad fight regularly and the children are often in the middle of the fights. Management has LOTS of room for improvement. The coworkers are some of the best people I've ever known and were very fun to work with. The art department's work hours got cut - more. The first time we were furloughed at Christmas, for financial reasons, we came back to brand new fancy chairs at all of the conference tables, which no one used. I have never worked anywhere else where the owners/management treated their employees so poorly. It was embarrassing having to tell authors/printers that we worked with that they would have to call or email someone else to get to us. The art department got banned from using the internet because "we MIGHT try to use it for things that we're not work related." The art department was also not allowed to email outside of the company or have phones at their desks. There was constant yelling between the owners and door slamming, and the employees were used as pawns between the King and Queen. The Queen would emerge from her office and jingle her keys at us when it was quitting time. There would be weeks and weeks of mandatory overtime where people would have to work 14-15 hour days for several weeks not knowing what time we could even leave for the night. Everyone basically lives in fear of being berated in front of their whole department, receiving a nasty email, have a "privilege" taken away (like internet access or a phone at your desk), being demoted or being fired. If you were not sitting at your desk silently staring at your computer you had better get there fast. The rest of the day would be working at your desk with wonderful coworkers. Then students choose the definition that matches the idiom.A typical work day included sitting in a "staff meeting" while the Queen (wife co-owner) talked about herself. ![]()
